Seattle faces challenge to balance housing and tree protection goals in Green Lake neighborhood
Seattle is facing a challenge to balance the need for housing with tree protection and its goal of a 30% urban canopy coverage by 2037, as seen in the debate over proposed updates to the cityโs tree protection ordinance. The update is aimed to protect more trees, encourage more planting and discourage unnecessary tree removals, but faced opposition from developers who need to build more housing in dense areas and environmentalists who want more guarantees for tree protection.

The Controversial History of Green Lake's Fish Management in Seattle
In 1950, the Washington State Game Department used rotenone to kill more than 660,000 fish in Green Lake, Seattle, including northern pikeminnow, suckers, perch, stickleback, and rainbow trout, which were considered "undesirable" and replaced with more attractive species. The state continued to use rotenone until 1976 and has since tried various methods to keep the lake in good shape for anglers, including stocking it with fish.
